The Gospels are books especially revered by Christians around the world as sacred; they tell about the life and deeds of our Lord Jesus Christ, His birth, miracles, death and Divine Resurrection. Among the many versions of the Gospels, the canonical (i.e., recognized as official Church) are considered four: the Gospel of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John. The Evangelist Luke told the world how the Archangel Gabriel came to earth and announced the good news to Mary - She was destined to become the Mother of the Son of God. Among the four New Testament gospels, the Gospel of Luke is considered the most detailed biography of Jesus Christ. Luke is also credited with the authorship of another book included in the New Testament - the Acts of the Holy Apostles. In Orthodoxy, Luke is considered the patron saint of doctors, since he himself was a doctor, and of painters, since the church recognized him as the first icon painter. Together with the holy Apostle Paul, Luke traveled around to the world, spreading the teachings and faith of Christ, for which he accepted martyrdom. Levi Matthew was one of the twelve apostles (disciples) of Jesus Christ. According to tradition, it is he who is considered the author of the Gospel of Matthew, which was written, according to some sources, fifty, according to others, seventy-five years after the crucifixion and resurrection of the Savior. It was Matthew in his Gospel who gave the most detailed account of the Sermon on the Mount - the word of God, in in which the entire essence of Christian teaching is concentrated. Like Luke, the evangelist Matthew wandered around the world, preaching the teaching and faith of Christ, for which he was executed, according to one source, in the Asia Minor city of Hierapolis.
