The memoirs of Flight Sergeant Miles Tripp, sometimes ironic, and sometimes instructive and dramatic, reveal a deep knowledge of flying, and the colorful jargon of British pilots brings extraordinary vividness to the story. Central to the book is the attitude of Tripp's comrades and himself to the mass murder of women and children as a result of the bombing of Dresden. The same actions in relation to Essen and Cologne, where military installations were located, did not give rise to such dilemmas. The author openly and sincerely talks about the war, about the problems of soldiers adapting to peaceful life, about fear, camaraderie and military duty.
