Valery Maxim, who lived in the first half of the 1st century. n. e., became famous as the author of a kind of moral, or moralizing, story. Having collected in nine books nine hundred and sixty-seven entertaining stories from the “deeds” and “sayings” of famous people of the past, he became incredibly popular in Rome. Valery is an encyclopedist-moralist who continues the famous tradition of Roman encyclopedism, adorned with the names of Cato the Elder, Marcus Terence Varro, and Aulus Cornelius Celsus. Valery himself, in turn, became a source for Pliny the Elder, Plutarch, and Aulus Gellius. Each section of Valery ends with so-called external examples, taken not only from the Greek world familiar to the Romans, but also from the life of other peoples: Gauls, Scythians, Persians. The most authoritative writers for Valery in these subsections are Herodotus, Plato, Xenophon, Thucydides. In Antiquity it was not customary to make any references to the works of predecessors, but the well-read Romans, of course, had no difficulty in recognizing the origin of this or that passage. In the Middle Ages, thirty manuscripts of Valerius were known, apparently created in the 12th century. or even earlier. During the Renaissance, printed publications were added, starting in 1470. Readers of that time, as J. Briscoe showed, especially appreciated Maxim for his exceptionally abundant and valuable information, presented in extremely brief forms. However, with the flourishing of classical philology, interest in Maxim was gradually lost. Due to the lack of a unified and harmonious composition, Valery Maxim's translations, with the exception of this edition, are extremely few in number. It is hoped that this translation will be useful both for scholars of antiquity and for generalists in the humanities who are interested in studying the cultural circle of Ancient Rome.
