This is the personal diary of the daughter of an aristocrat and dignitary, Sugawara no Takasue, written by her almost a thousand years ago. It contained almost forty years of life - attachments and losses, marriage and children, court service and pilgrimages to distant temples. One could say that her whole life passes before us in these memoirs, but we do not know when Takasue's Daughter died. Perhaps, after finishing the diary (she was already over fifty), she retired to a quiet mountain monastery and there she spent her days in prayer, trusting in the mercy of the Buddha Amida, who appeared to her in a vision in her declining years. The diary “Sarasina Nikki” paints an image of a timid and unsociable a dreamer who “fell in love with deceptions,” imagined herself as the heroine of a novel, often dreamed in reality, and kept her dreams in her memory no less carefully than the impressions of real life. Fortunately, this lonely voice has not faded away over the centuries, has not been lost in the choir, and to this day sounds sad, sincere and pure.
