The author of these memoirs can be called a veteran in the full sense of the word, despite the fact that by the time the Second World War ended he was only 21 years old. With the rank of lieutenant, Armin Scheiderbauer fought for several years as part of the 252nd Infantry Division on the Soviet-German front, where he was wounded six times. Beginning in the summer of 1942, Scheiderbauer took part in several defensive battles in the central sector of the Eastern Front, in the areas of Gzhatsk, Yelnya and Smolensk. Unique to the reader is the description of the disaster of the German Army Group Center in Belarus in the summer of 1944, as well as the subsequent fierce fighting in Lithuania and Poland. In March 1945, at the Battle of Danzig, Scheiderbauer was seriously wounded and hospitalized. Together with other wounded, he was captured by Soviet troops who entered the city, and in September 1947 he was released and sent to Austria, his homeland.
