The children's fairy tale “Luka and the Fire of Life” is a continuation of the fairy-tale mini-novel “Harun and the Sea of Stories.” Rushdie wrote "Haruna" in 1990 for his eldest son Zafar; he told his father that he should write something that could be read to children. This book was the first for the writer since Ayatollah Khomeini sentenced him to death in absentia for his novel The Satanic Verses. Its hero, 12-year-old Haroun, helps his father regain his storytelling ability. Rushdie writes “Luca” for his youngest son, Milan. The hero of the sequel, Harun's younger brother, will also help his father - this time to look for the fire of life.
