In the USSR this grandiose battle was called the Korsun-Shevchenko operation, and in Germany “Kesselschlacht bei Tscherkassy” (“battle in the cauldron near Cherkassy”). Then, in January 1944, in the area of the city of Korsun, Soviet troops surrounded ten enemy divisions, which fought with superior forces of the Red Army for more than three weeks, until finally, on the night of February 17, they broke through the encirclement and, having lost up to 55 thousand people and all equipment, nevertheless escaped from the “cauldron” to join the main forces of the Wehrmacht. As usual, each side declared the Battle of Korsun a victory. Soviet sources rightly point to the enemy’s huge losses and the complete loss of combat effectiveness of even the units that escaped the encirclement. The Germans emphasize the massive heroism of their soldiers and the “miracle” they performed in escaping a hopeless situation. This book presents this point of view to the domestic reader for the first time, allowing one to look at one of the decisive battles of World War II through the eyes of the enemy.
