This story happened when Sherlock Holmes had not yet become famous as a famous detective, Arsene Lupine was not known as a brilliant adventurer, and Irene Adler had not become That Woman. Now, in 1870, they are just teenagers who met and became friends on vacation in Saint-Malo.
