Bernard Malamud (1914–1986) was one of the leading American writers of his generation. Author of several collections of short stories, including “The Magic Barrel” (1958), “Idiots First” (1963), “Rembrandt’s Hat” (1973), and the novels “The Assistant” (1957), “New Life” (1961) , “Neighbours” (1971), “The Grace of God” (1982), each of which became an event. The destinies, morals and tragedy of the Jews constantly occupy Malamud, the son of Jewish parents who emigrated from Tsarist Russia. So go the other way, Jewish pain, at least in an echo, sounds in all his works. The famous novel “The Master” (1966, Pulitzer Prize, National Award) is built on documents, knowledge of life and nothing less than prenatal memory. It is based on the “Beilis case” (Kyiv, 1913), when an innocent person was accused of murder for ritual purposes simply because he had the misfortune of being born a Jew. Not much is known about Baylis's inner appearance, but it can be assumed that he was attractive in his sincerity, otherwise the jury would hardly have acquitted him. With the power of talent, Malamud recreates the charming character of a simple, but intelligent, internally intelligent and noble craftsman. The suffering of an innocent man subjected to injustice and cruelty, courageous resistance to jailers, the hopeless attempts of a generous investigator to rescue an innocent man, the tragic doom of these attempts, but next to all this are the complex vicissitudes of the hero’s relationship with his wife, comically sweet arguments with his father-in-law and even touching debates with the poor woman. The nags are created by exciting changes in the movement of the plot. Against the gloomy background of the wild, dirty, uncomfortable Russian life, very different people pass by, Jews and Russians, and in the foreground is the master, Yakov Bok - a pure soul, overcoming all temptations and bullying, keeping himself clean.
