This book is devoted to an anthropological analysis of the phenomenon of the Russian left avant-garde, represented primarily by the works of constructivists, production workers and factographers, who concentrated in the 1920s around the magazines “LEF” and “New LEF” and institutes such as INKHUK, VKHUTEMAS and GAKHN. We understand the left avant-garde as a self-reflective socio-anthropological practice that does not lose any of its artistic merits due to the conscious appeal of its protagonists to solving the political and everyday problems of the people who received the opportunity for social liberation at the beginning of the last century. We turn with appropriate interdisciplinary tools of analysis to such different figures as Andrei Bely and Andrei Platonov, Nikolai Evreinov and Dziga Vertov, Gustav Shpet, Boris Arvatov and others. What unites such different authors is the discovery in their works of a special layer of sensuality and an alternative bourgeois-individualist structure unconscious, which we describe with the provocative concept of “collective sensuality”. Collectivity here does not mean an external social organization, but an immanent structure of images of corresponding artistic works-things, allowing them to simultaneously appear useful and expedient, convenient and aesthetically impeccable.
