The pages of this book were presented at the exhibition “Fantastic Art, Dada and Surrealism” at the New York Museum of Modern Art in 1936. They were studied by Max Ernst and reproduced in his journal by J. Bataille. “What a Life!”, whose authors actually invented the collage novel, became a reference book for Dadaists and surrealists. The combination of purely English absurd humor and illustrations borrowed from a trade catalog turns into a caustic satire on the swaggering aristocracy, a total parody of advertising, literary styles and genres, morals and way of thinking: such is the cheerful book “What a Life!”, created at the beginning of the twentieth century and has not yet lost its popularity.
