The Letters of Amina became the main event of the new Scandinavian literature - the debutant was immediately nicknamed the “Danish Irvine Welsh”, and his second novel “Submarine” drew the attention of Lars von Trier’s colleague in “Dogma” Thomas Vinterberg (the film adaptation of the same name was included in the official program of the Berlinale 2010). “Letters from Amina” is a kind of travel novel with thriller elements, an exploration of the theme of an externally imposed social norm, inevitably echoing Ken Kesey’s “Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.” Twenty-four-year-old Janus has been kept in a psychiatric hospital for four years now, diagnosed with “paranoid schizophrenia.” . The only thread connecting him with the outside world are letters from Amina, a former classmate at the gymnasium, originally from Turkey. But the correspondence is unexpectedly interrupted - Amina, for no apparent reason, stops answering Janus’s letters, and he decides to go in search of his friend in order to get to the bottom of the truth. Having thoroughly studied the psychology of doctors, he skillfully manipulates the hospital staff and other patients, and finally he is discharged from the clinic. Janus stays in the apartment of his brother, a successful businessman who spends most of his time abroad, and in search of Amina, who has disappeared without a trace, begins a journey through the circles of the city hell.
