The heroine of the novel, an investigator from the prosecutor's office, is faced with a series of sudden suicides of quite prosperous and cheerful people. Gradually, she is forced to come to the conclusion that she is dealing with some self-proclaimed intellectual deity or demon, who, like the ancient bloodthirsty gods, needs systematic bloody sacrifices to maintain her own stability. Using any clues, sometimes acting almost blindly, using the help of a variety of people, from psychics to computer geniuses, the heroine of the novel develops on the go strategy and tactics of war with an incomprehensible and merciless enemy.
