Shlyopik has always been a faithful dog. When his human comrade, Major Torkildsen, dies, Shlöpik and Mrs. Torkildsen are left alone. The slap mourns the major, consoled himself with mountains of delicious food, and Mrs. Thorkildsen with megaliters of “dragon water.” Previously, they treated each other with doubt, but now they quickly find a common language. And the general theme. This unexpectedly turns out to be the expedition of Roald Amundsen to the South Pole, which, of course, was led not by people at all, but by brave dogs; people only took credit for their victory. But the quiet days that Shlöpik and Mrs. Thorkildsen spend reading, immersing themselves in the vicissitudes of the famous Antarctic journey, are disrupted by the arrival of Mrs. Thorkildsen’s son and her daughter-in-law. An ironic, tragic, whimsical novel about old age, friendship and the fact that it is time for man to reconsider his attitude towards animals as lower beings.
