He was at various times the court physician, pharmacist, director of the arsenal and admiral in Lahore under Maharaja Ranjit Singh, and more than once made significant fortunes and lost them. An adventurer of high class, Honigberger was never a charlatan. He surpassed many sciences, real and occult, and his collections - ethnographic, botanical, numismatic and artistic - adorned the famous museums of the world.
