Sometimes life changes dramatically in a matter of seconds - and never returns to its previous course. This is what happened to Yanna-Bertha when classes at school were suddenly canceled and students were ordered to urgently evacuate. At the nuclear power plant in Grafenreinfeld - several tens of kilometers from his native Schlitz and very close to Schweinfurt, where his parents went! — there was an accident, and the radioactive cloud will be here in a couple of hours. Yanna-Berta and her younger brother Uli rush to their bicycles and rush out of the city - like hundreds of other families. Having gone through vanity and panic, through tragic accidents and situations of personal choice, through hospitals and other people’s houses, Yanna-Bertha will return to her homeland as a completely different person - matured and ready to defend her right to life. “Most of all I wanted to illustrate the possible consequences of the incident at the reactor and warn readers about them,” Gudrun Pausewang explained why she decided to write the story “The Cloud.” She was forced to sit down at the table and create this text by news from Chernobyl in 1986 - and the book was published in Germany a year after the disaster. It was later translated into English and other languages, becoming a true teen classic, and in 2006 it was filmed: Gregor Schnitzler’s film “The Cloud” was recognized by the jury as the best film for young people at a festival in Bavaria. The story told by a German writer is true. and fiction at the same time. No matter how frightening the events described may seem, they can become reality. Intolerance of victims by people who escaped the disaster may also become a reality, and the irresponsibility of the authorities has already become it: while discussing the benefits of nuclear power plants, politicians and industrialists are silent about the risks that nuclear energy is associated with. The warning story “The Cloud” is intended for teenagers, but the author’s courage and frankness will touch even adult readers.
