The outstanding Israeli novelist David Grossman reveals the plot of the biblical hero Samson from an unexpected angle. In his essay, this mighty hero and servant of God appears as a man with a subtle and vulnerable soul, doomed to rejection and loneliness. The image, which has inspired many artists, composers and writers over the centuries and entered the consciousness of the Jewish people as a national hero, leads the author, and after him the readers, to the question: “Why do people so often choose the path leading to failure, when more all in need of salvation? This happens with individuals, with societies, and with nations; sometimes it seems that some depressing cyclicality pushes them to reproduce their tragic choice again and again... “Grossman reveals to us the tormented soul of the biblical Samson - the soul of a child, imprisoned in the body of a hero, thirsting for love, but doomed to loneliness and rejection. Duality, like fire, runs rampant in him: monasticism and lust; a body with gigantic muscles and an “artistic” and sublime soul; the savagery of the killer and the understanding that he is only an instrument in the hands of some “Divine Providence”... for all eternity he is destined to remain a stranger and even an outcast among people; and he will never be able to “become like other people.”
