“Monsters” continues the “incomplete collected works” of Dmitry Aleksandrovich Prigov (1940–2007). This volume includes works by Prigov that represent his original “theological project.” Prigov's theology, parodic-comic and serious in equal measure, presupposes the process of finding universal balance by abolishing the distinctions between the transcendent and the everyday, the divine and the devil, the human and the bestial. The central category in this project was the category of the monstrous, which arises as a result of the combination of metaphysically opposite states. Embodied in the monster motif, this theme unites various areas of Prigov’s artistic and philosophical experiments: from poetic research in the field of “new anthropology” to “apophatic cataphatics” (Prigov’s version of negative theology), from reflections on the metaphysics of creativity to descriptions of the monsters of history and power ideology, from “Cockroachomachy,” a quasi-epic account of a domestic war with cockroaches, to Prigov’s largest and most complex prose work, the novel Renat and the Dragon. Like other volumes of the collection, “Monsters” includes not only works known to the reader, but previously unpublished works by Prigov, preserved in the home archive. Some works are reproduced preserving the author's spelling and punctuation. Some texts use profanity.
