The name of Igor Kon is widely known. His numerous books arouse constant interest among readers. The new book “The Male Body in the History of Culture” is part of the author’s project “Men in a Changing World.” Igor Kon traces how the artistic representation of the male body and its canons varied from era to era, from culture to culture. The book is built on a wealth of visual material: it contains more than 400 illustrations - from images of the Paleolithic era, works of world painting and sculpture to modern photography and even advertising.
Images of African leaders and Chinese warriors, Olmec figurines from South America and The cult figurines of the Papuans amaze with their unusualness and expressiveness. The harmonious proportions of Greek sculptures, the restraint of the images of the Middle Ages, the emancipation of the flesh of the Renaissance, the athletic and muscular body cultivated by the militaristic ideologies of the twentieth century, reflecting the ideals of their time, replace each other and remain alive in the fine art of Goya.
