Peter Aleshkovsky (b. 1957) - prose writer, historian. Winner of the Russian Booker Prize for his novel “Fortress.” A young man from a small town, Daniil Khorev (“Biography of a Weasel”), is an orphan, a street child, endowed with a special instinct that prevents him from getting lost either in taiga wanderings or in city labyrinths. Nurse Vera (“Fish”), who escaped in the nineties from Central Asia, which had become dangerous for Russians, has the ability to help the sick through inner prayer. Two stories - the “holy robber” and the simple-minded disinterested woman - are told by the author almost like the lives of the righteous, although the heroes themselves do not think about it. “The Seventh Suitcase” is a memoir story written with the utmost sincerity, but “there are always doors in history, tightly closed even to the writer himself”...
