The collection of works by the modern patriarch of Chan Buddhism, Sheng-yan, is a commentary on the poetic works of the ancient Chan masters.

The main goal of the author is to help the reader gain invaluable experience in the practice of Chan (Zen), penetrating through poetry into the consciousness of Chan masters - their experiences at the moment of enlightenment and after it. Sheng-yan continues the traditions of the two main schools of Chinese Chan Buddhism: Linji (Rinzai) and Caodong (Soto), adapting them to the needs of our time. The book touches on the history of philosophy, religion and literature of China, the origins and theories of Buddhism.
