The action takes place at the end of the war in one of the small German towns, which is liberated by American troops. At the center of the action is the city art museum and its employees. The narrative strictly alternates between two lines: on the one hand, museum workers hiding in a shelter and hoping for salvation—their own and the museum’s—and on the other, American soldiers, who a little later discover several burnt corpses in the museum’s basement. The “perspective” stated in the title is, rather, a retrospective look at the origins (both historical and metaphysical) of the tragedy that happened.
