In the summer of 1912, the steam-sailing schooner “St. Anna" under the leadership of naval lieutenant Georgy Brusilov, nephew of the outstanding Russian military leader A. A. Brusilov. But already in October, squeezed by heavy ice near Yamal and then frozen into it, it began to drift north and the next year ended up in latitudes close to the North Pole. In the summer of 1914, part of the crew, led by navigator Albanov, set off on an unprecedented journey across drifting ice to the nearest land. Of the 13 people, only two were saved: navigator Valerian Albanov and sailor Alexander Konrad. Unplanned drift of "St. Anna" and Albanov's ice campaign made it possible to make several important geographical discoveries. In particular, it became known that the mythical islands - Peterman Land, King Oscar Land and Gilis Land - do not exist. For the writer Veniamin Kaverin, Albanov became the prototype of navigator Klimov in the novel “Two Captains”. The fate of the remaining participants in the expedition, as well as the remaining crew members on the ship, led by G. L. Brusilov, was still unknown. And so, in the summer months of 2010 and 2011, a search expedition with the assistance of the Border Service and aviation of the Russian FSB made sensational finds on Franz Josef Land.
