The book examines the role of the state in the modern world. Global disruptions and geopolitical shifts, climate change, rapid advances in technology, demographic shifts, limited resources, and the increasingly diverse demands and expectations of citizens are just some of the driving forces of societal transformation affecting the work of governments. Governments of different countries are changing approaches to management, provision of services, interaction with citizens, business circles and the third sector, but they have still not been able to develop optimal practices for responding to these challenges. Effective Government for a New Century presents the latest ideas in modern government. It describes current trends in management practice, suggests options for operating models, processes and tools, and explores the ways in which governments are trying to respond to the greatest challenges of our time. The authors of the book, Rabi Abuchakra and Michelle Khoury, hold senior positions in the Office of Strategic Affairs of the Government of Abu Dhabi. Both have significant experience in strategic planning in the public sector. The author of the foreword, Robin Butler, Baron Brockwell, served as Chief of Staff to five British Prime Ministers.
