The seventh "G", previously friendly and calm, was divided into groups. In the first - “Azerbaijanis”, in the other - “Armenians”, in the third - the rest: Russians, Tatars, Jews, Georgians. One student does not belong to anyone: her Russian name, her mother’s Armenian surname, her Azerbaijani father – all this makes Sveta Avanesova a stranger in any company. The heroine of the story “Red, Yellow, Blue” cannot understand why nationality has suddenly become so important; the rest, both children and adults, seem to not need an answer at all. The Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict forces the family to split up, Sveta and her mother move from Baku to Yerevan - only to find themselves “different” there again. The collection also includes the story “Photos for Memory,” published in Compass Guide in 2012. It covers several eras: the post-war years, when boys won respect in the yard with strength, courage and football skill; the end of the 1980s, when the ending of the surname and the shape of the nose suddenly became most important; modernity, when the conflict experienced is echoed by dull pain, and many witnesses remain only in faded photographs. Margaret Manukyan left her native Baku as a teenager, and then Russia - and years later, living in New York, she recalls the turning point in her life. “I haven’t forgotten anyone, I remember everyone and love them very much,” neither distance nor nationality can be an obstacle to her feelings. The history of the conflict around Nagorno-Karabakh is a rare topic in Russian, especially teenage literature. Maria Martirosova manages to find the exact words to describe the depth of the tragedy that separated the two peoples, but at the same time leave politics and moralizing aside. The main thing for the author is people, the irreversibility of their actions and spoken words. The first edition of “Photos for Memory” received the prize named after. A. Gaidar and was included in many lists: long lists of the I. P. Belkin and BabuNOS awards, short list of the Prize named after. L. Tolstoy's "Yasnaya Polyana", as well as the list of outstanding children's books in the world "White Crows", compiled by the Munich International Children's Library. Two stories together are like an epic beginning to be forgotten, not belonging to any single nation - but to all nations at once. The collection “Red, Yellow, Blue” is supplemented with atmospheric illustrations by Tatyana Sugachkova, a winner of the “Image of a Book 2014”, “Nami Concours 2015” and others competitions: old Baku comes to life in them as a quiet, peaceful and cozy city - this is how Maria Martirosova wants to remember it.
