The tragic epilogue of Pushkin's life is the main theme of the historical novel, called by the author "Notes of d'Archiac." The story here is told on behalf of a young French diplomat who took part in the famous fight on January 27, 1837 as one of the seconds. Viscount d'Archiac, attaché at the French embassy in St. Petersburg, as a friend and relative of Georges d'Anthes, Pushkin's murderer, was privy to all the secrets of dueling history, and as a diplomatic representative of France, he carefully studied St. Petersburg government circles, high society and the court of Nicholas I This allows the author to unfold the circumstances of Pushkin’s last duel against the backdrop of imperial Petersburg in the thirties, depicting the events and customs of the era from the point of view of a European politician interested in major statesmen and characteristic social phenomena of the then autocratic Russia.
