He was a contemporary of the artistic revolution carried out by the Fauvists and Cubists. Color was freed from nature and became part of the colorful surface of the canvas. For you and me, dear reader, who have already recorded both Picasso and Matisse in the museum archive, it is difficult to imagine how different Pirosmanashvili’s works were from what they used to call painting at the beginning of the 20th century. Genius talent revealed to the master the secrets of the magic of working with a brush and paints. He never tried to reproduce a visual impression like a naturalist. He didn’t tell stories, didn’t moralize, didn’t try to entertain or make the viewer laugh. With courage and enthusiasm, he set out to create not a likeness, but an equivalent of the world around him. In contrast to fast-flowing life, Pirosmani’s world belonged to eternity. His art was in tune with the most daring innovations and had a great influence on the further development of both the Georgian and Russian schools of painting.
