The book “Gogol's Realism” was created by G. A. Gukovsky in 1946–1949. Work on it was not completed by the late author. In particular, from the planned large chapter or even a separate volume on “Dead Souls” only an introductory section was written. This book was, according to G. A. Gukovsky’s plan, to be part of his large work, designed for several volumes, dedicated to the development of the realistic style in Russian literature of the 19th–20th centuries. She continues his previously written works about Pushkin (“Pushkin and the Russian Romantics”, Saratov, 1946, and “Pushkin and the Problems of Realistic Style”, M., Goslitizdat, 1957). It was to be followed by a work about Leo Tolstoy.
