The news that the war was over found Reinhold Braun during fierce fighting in Czechoslovakia. And from that moment his long and dangerous journey back to his homeland in Germany began. Brown writes about how he went through captivity, about humiliation, hunger, cold, hard work and severe beatings. About former comrades in arms who betrayed their compatriots for an extra piece, and about those who remained faithful to the front-line brotherhood, about what meanness and true friendship are. Together with his comrades, he experiences the bitterness of disappointment that all the sacrifices and hardships were in vain, Germany has fallen, on both sides there are mountains of corpses, destroyed cities and legions of crippled, disfigured destinies. And as is often the case with former Wehrmacht soldiers, the author does not see the guilt of his fatherland in crimes committed against humanity.
