Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich was the first representative of the Romanov dynasty, which ruled Russia for more than 300 years. His rise to power was associated with dramatic events in the country. They began with the death in 1598 of the childless Tsar Fyodor Ivanovich, who left no heir. Therefore, for fifteen years, the Moscow throne turned into an arena of struggle between legitimate and self-proclaimed claimants. The Zemsky Sobor, convened at the beginning of 1613, elected Mikhail Fedorovich Romanov, who was related by family ties to the last representative of the dynasty of Moscow princes - Tsar Fedor Ivanovich, as the new Tsar. In his person, formally, the line of previous monarchs continued. The young people's choice in a relatively short period of time successfully solved many difficult tasks: restored state power in the center and locally, repelled the attacks of Polish and Swedish invaders and concluded a truce with them, established civil peace in the country and created conditions for the establishment of economic life. All this allowed Mikhail Fedorovich not only to successfully rule for more than 30 years, but also to found the Romanov royal dynasty. Its representatives jointly created one of the most powerful world empires - the Russian one.
