“The Movements of Her Eyes” is the first part of the novel “The Evolution of the Beloved,” which never became a full-fledged space opera: only the initial fragment was written in this vein. “None of my stories or novellas can be classified as space opera,” says Westerfeld. However, this story about a teenage girl who, together with artificial intelligence, accompanies her father, an independent journalist, on his not entirely legal hunt for sensations (in some modern space operas, economic problems replace military conflicts) can certainly be called a space opera. The story, originally published separately, brings to mind John Wright's The Guest Law, the romance stories of Cordwainer Smith and Leigh Brackett, and Delaney's The Imperial Star. This is the harbinger of space opera for the new millennium.
