Princess Olga Alexandrovna Shcherbatova (1857–1944) devoted almost twenty years of her life to travel. Together with her husband, Prince A.G. Shcherbatov (1850–1915), president of the Imperial Moscow Society of Agriculture, she visited the Arab East, India, Ceylon, Singapore, Indonesia, and crossed almost all of Java. The result of these travels were her unique books. The book “In the Land of Volcanoes” was published in 1897. Thanks to her, many previously unknown information about the national character, way of life, morals, and customs of the people inhabiting the archipelago and its main island, Java, became available to Russian readers of the late 19th century. The Russian princess diligently studied the Malay language and was able to communicate, although not without difficulties , with the local population, which helped her to understand even better the features of this amazing region. O.A. Shcherbatova had an excellent command of the Russian language and had an undoubted literary talent, and her travel impressions recall “Frigate Pallada” by I.A. Goncharov, published several decades earlier. When preparing the book for reissue, the author’s literary style was completely preserved; clarifications affected only spelling. The editors have prepared a list and translation of Malay words found in the text, indexes of names and geographical names, bibliography. For orientalists and anyone interested in the history, culture and life of the inhabitants of Southeast Asia.
