On the centenary of the first edition of Raffaello Sabatini's novel "The Odyssey of Captain Blood" Recently, three manuscripts of the same time, signed by Jeremy Pitt, were discovered in the archives of the William Taylor publishing house, where the novel "Robinson Crusoe" was published in 1719. As their further analysis showed, the first of them turned out to be the basis for the novel “The Odyssey of Captain Blood.” Two others, previously unknown, recount the same events, but in a slightly different version. In them, Jeremy Pitt, under the guidance of the publisher, gradually eliminated historical inaccuracies, while at the same time trying to keep his narrative entertaining. The accompanying work contains Jeremy Pitt's discussion with the publisher, as well as those passages from the last two manuscripts that differ from the canonical text of the novel. All the materials given below only complement and clarify those facts and the historical background that were described by Sabatini in his wonderful timeless novel, although now the ending of the odyssey itself becomes ambiguous.
