The famous Israeli writer Amos Oz was born in 1939 in Jerusalem. He is the author of twenty-two books, which have been translated into thirty-four languages. The novels “My Michael”, “Until Death”, “Black Box”, “Knowing a Woman” were published in Russian. Before us is a new book by Amos Oz - “A Tale of Love and Darkness”. Love and darkness are two forces at work in this autobiographical work written like a gripping novel. This broad epic canvas recreates the fateful events of national history, refracted through the destinies of the author’s relatives and friends, through his own destiny. The writer courageously sets out on a journey that leads him to that single moment when the fate of a dreamy teenager is tragically broken and he decisively leaves for a new life. Using all the variety of literary techniques that sometimes amaze even a sophisticated reader, the author creates a portrait of a young artist for whom the secrets of his own family, its suffering and unfulfilled hopes become the core of his creative life. A large place in the book is occupied by those with whom life brought the young hero together - famous figures from the era of the formation of the Jewish state, the founders of Hebrew culture: David Ben-Gurion, Menachem Begin, Shaul Chernichovsky, Shmuel Yosef Agnon, Uri Zvi Greenberg and others. The complex interweaving of the plot, the stunning expressiveness of many episodes, soft irony - all this makes “A Tale of Love and Darkness” a deep, sincere, exciting work. It is no coincidence that more than 100,000 copies of this book have been sold in Israel, and, translated into many languages, it has already crossed the borders of our country. In 2005, Amos Oz was awarded one of the most prestigious world awards - the Goethe Prize.
