The novel “Arina” is about great love, and even on Russian soil. The young provincial Arina, of course, of unearthly beauty, and in addition a student of the Higher Courses for Women, falls in love in Moscow with a man named Konstantin-Mikhail (obviously, the author meant the Grand Duke). Their mutual feeling is overshadowed by the fact that Arina sells herself because “she feels an urgent need, even a duty, to develop her abilities, to study at the university, to take part in higher spiritual activities.” But at the end of the novel it turns out that the girl is absolutely pure... This indecent story is called “Arina” (1919).
