It took the famous Siberian writer Nikolai Zadornov more than twenty years to create his famous cycle of four novels about the pioneering captain Gennady Nevelsky. The novel “The Distant Land” consists of two stories and tells about the difficult and dangerous life of the Amur region aborigines. The peace-loving Gilyaks and Samaras, hunters and fishermen, are forced to constantly defend their freedom from encroachment by their cruel and greedy neighbors - the Manchus and Chinese. And then there’s a new problem - Jesuit missionaries who are trying to impose alien and incomprehensible laws and orders on the taiga inhabitants. And probably, the Amur residents alone would not have been able to fight off their numerous enemies, but the Russian Cossacks and settlers came to their rescue...
