“The Gutenberg Galaxy” is one of the most significant works of the Canadian scientist Marshall McLuhan, literary critic, sociologist, cultural scientist, and a famous representative of technicalism in the philosophy of culture. Some of his hypotheses have become axioms of our civilization, and a number of his original provisions are still being developed by modern McLuhanism. “The Gutenberg Galaxy” presents a mosaic approach to historical problems. After the naturalness and harmoniousness of relationships inherent in tribalism, the era of the absolute power of visualization began. The main sin of Western civilization is the creation of an alphabet and writing based on it. A “Gutenberg Galaxy” has emerged, where all literate people are, to one degree or another, split personalities, schizophrenics. This led to decollectivization, detribalization, and individualism. And while encouraging individualism, printing at the same time gives rise to nationalism, turning language as a means of communication into a closed system. With the advent of the electronic era, symbolized by audiovisual equipment, human consciousness joins a closed global system of video communications. This contributes to the development of the brain, and a prototype of a new civilization arises on the planet - electronic tribalism, the era of planetary uniformitarianism, or, according to McLuhan, the “global village”. Translated into Russian for the first time; designed for everyone who is interested in the philosophy of culture.
