The reader would be in for a fascinating, albeit quite traditional detective story, but the time and place of action give the story an unusual, tragic sound: the events of the novel take place in the midst of the Nazis’ “final solution” to the Jewish question, and all the characters - detectives, witnesses, murderer - are inhabitants of the Jewish ghetto who will share a common fate.
