Priest Sergius Zheludkov (06/7/1909 - 01/30/1984) sent the first version of the “Liturgical Notes” to the “Calendar and Liturgical Commission” at the Holy Synod. The work received a favorable assessment from Professor D.P. Ogitsky. A significantly expanded and revised book appeared in samizdat in 1973. Partially published in the "Bulletin of the RSHD" in 1972-73 (Nos. 103-107).O. Sergius calls his “Liturgical Notes” “untimely reflections, mainly of a critical nature.” “It is usually customary to praise our Russian church services as the height of all perfection. This is indeed true in relation to genuine treasures, which we must carefully preserve, showing good, intelligent conservatism. But along with them, in our liturgical heritage there are also such historical layers that have become relics, which today have only a negative meaning, from which we must, as far as possible, be freed. Often this is also accompanied by a lack of church culture among the church authorities. As a result, our church service often turns out to be such only in name, because it does not fulfill its purpose - it does not attract, does not inspire, does not correspond to the greatness of our faith, and appears not as glory, but as a humiliation of the Church. Today, in our country as well as in the West, we can talk about the liturgical crisis of Christianity."
