For almost 20 years, Diana Kochubey de Beauharnais (1918–1989), daughter of Prince Eugene Kochubey, was the companion of Georges Bataille. She published only one book, Angels with Whips (1955). In this “vicious” novel, which was published by the famous Olympia Press and was banned by censorship, echoes of Bataille’s texts are heard. June 1866. Young Victoria greets Kenneth and Angela, relatives returning to England after a long stay in India. No one in the estate suspects that the new friends whom the girl idolizes have decided to reveal to her the secrets of love pleasures. The first Russian translation of “Angels with Whips” is supplemented by texts by Georges Bataille dedicated to Diana Kochubey.
