Appearance in the armies of Western states in the mid-50s. tanks capable of firing sub-caliber shells with a detachable tray, as well as non-rotating cumulative shells that pierced the armor of Soviet T-54 and T-55 tanks, required the organization of work to create new tank weapons and put into production combat vehicles with improved combat power. In 1957, at the Uralvagonzavod design bureau, a team of engineers led by L.N. Kartseva began developing a new tank, designated T-62. It was a significantly improved version of the T-55 tank and was first demonstrated to the public at a military parade on May 1, 1965. Operation of the tank in army units revealed its relatively poor suitability for combat operations. For this reason, production of the T-62 was discontinued in 1975 after the production of 20 thousand units. and before the production of T-55 family tanks ended. However, T-62 tanks entered service with many armies, including Algeria, Angola, Bulgaria, Cuba, Czechoslovakia, Ethiopia, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, and Vietnam. As part of the Syrian and Egyptian troops, T-62 tanks took part in battles with Israeli military units in 1967 and 1973, after which a number of them ended up in the Israeli army.
