The psychological novel “The Awakening” is the second book by the famous Canadian writer Margaret Atwood, published in 1972 - long before the author’s world bestsellers such as “The Handmaid’s Tale”, “Oryx and Crake”, “The Blind Assassin” and others. The novel, which has already been published twice in Russian, is presented in a new translation. The main character, whose name is not named, is a young talented artist. Together with her lover and another couple, she goes to a distant and mysterious island in northern Quebec, where she was born and spent her childhood. For many years, the heroine’s father lived here completely alone, but now he has suddenly disappeared. Trying to find the answer to this strange disappearance, the woman is faced with the dark shadows of her own past, the feelings and thoughts of a child who has matured, but has not been able to heal the deep wounds inflicted by this past. Immersion in an isolated atmosphere gradually reveals problems from the present: a crumbling marriage, beneath whose deceptive surface lies violence and death; complicated relationships between the characters, serving as a catalyst for their conflict; a choice whose consequences can lead to the realm of savagery and madness; a revelation that will change the rest of your life...
