The narrator, a French writer, is invited to teach literary skills in a small town, at one of the universities in Virginia. While looking for a plot for a future novel, she learns about a young man sentenced to death for the murder of a minor, committed with extreme cruelty and aggravated by rape. But this man, who has already spent ten years on death row, continues to deny his guilt. The narrator, having met him, is imbued with confidence that murder has been pinned on him, and tries to prove it. “Honey and Ice” is not an ordinary police novel, but a deep psychological study of the personality of a convict and the high society of a typical American town with its secrets, tragedies and crimes, a society in which the real culprits are protected by their social status, traditions and family status. We can say that in this novel Paul Constant appears as a continuer of the best traditions of Camus and Sartre, Dostoevsky and Zola.
