New Zealand ultra-conservative scholar Kerry Bolton examines the political views of such giants of the last century as Gabriele d'Annunzio, William Yates, Richard Wagner and others in relation to Nietzschean and Spenglerian concepts of the Superman and historical cycles. Based on the fact that it was Nietzsche and Spengler who determined the development of thought in the 20th century, the author illuminates the situation in the intellectual circles of the Old and New Worlds. The writers, poets and philosophers presented in the book often had polar views on the ideologies of the masses, on religion and industrialization, on the heritage of the past and the fruits of the future. However, all of them, to one degree or another, rejected materialism and egalitarianism, and they all experienced anxiety due to the collapse of culture and traditions. It was these factors that forced them to look for an alternative to communism and capitalism, as a result of which they accepted right-wing radical ideas, combining them with paganism, Christianity and atheism. And it is these factors that put such incomparable personalities as Thomas Eliot and Aleister Crowley, Philippa Marinetti and Knut Hamsun, Julius Evola and Percy Stevensen on a par.
