The founder of comparative religion and mythology, an outstanding linguist, an expert on Indian texts, Professor at Oxford University Max Muller was also the editor of a multi-volume (more than 50 volumes) series called Sacred Books of the East, published from 1879 to 1894. Muller himself owns translations of the Upanishads, Jammapadas, translations of Vedic hymns and Buddhist texts. The book offered to the reader was translated in 1901 and is still referred to as a fundamental work on Indian philosophy and religion. Modern transcription of Sanskrit concepts and names was done by S. V . Igoshina.
