Noteboom's small novel (in our opinion, a story) “The Next Story” created a lot of noise at the Frankfurt Book Fair in 1993. Noteboom began to be translated into almost all European languages, while in his native country the fame that fell on the writer, which essentially raised the prestige of all Dutch literature, was met either with a bewildered shrug of the shoulders or poorly concealed irritation. This novel is like a mosaic of allusions and motives key to the writer’s creativity. Almost every image in the story etymologically goes back to the previous books of Noteboom, who imbues these images with new nuanced meanings at each new turn of the creative spiral.
