“Vertograd Elderhood” is one of the attempts to present the history of the Vvedenskaya Optina Hermitage, which contains information about a large number of inhabitants of the monastery. It also tells about all the elders, most of whom are now glorified as saints. Fragments of the “Necropolis of Optina Hermitage” compiled in 1924–1925 by N. G. Chulkova are published for the first time. The compiler of the book, monk Lazar (Afanasyev), used in it the most accessible printed and archival material dedicated to the famous monastery. Since the early 1990s, he has worked extensively on Optina topics and published more than ten books, lives, essays and articles in church periodicals.
