Frivolous and careless Kenji makes good money by introducing American tourists to the exotic nightlife of Tokyo. His girlfriend does not object on one condition: he must spend New Year's Eve with her. However, Kenji's latest client, the aggressive psychopath Frank, disrupts all of his guide's vacation plans. A fat man with superhuman strength, whose skin feels metallic to the touch, prone to the habit of meaningless and contradictory lies, he becomes disgusted with Kenji at first sight. Kenji even suspects that this, the ugliest of all the Americans he knows, killed and dismembered a local schoolgirl and sacrificed a homeless tramp. But until Kenji has proof, he must accompany the monster in human form from one crazy scene to another. This is an inexplicably compelling nightmare for both Kenji and the reader, who, unable to tear himself away from the book, alternately hopes that Kenji will either wake up in a cold sweat or notify the police about what is happening to him.
