“The Ghost Ship” (1837–1839) by the English writer, naval officer and traveler, classic of adventure prose Frederick Marryat, who became famous under the pseudonym Captain Marryat, is perhaps the most famous literary variation of the ancient legend about the “Flying Dutchman”, the mysterious a sailing ship without a crew, which wanders the ocean for centuries, never touching the shore and terrifying sailors. The main character of the novel, the young sailor Philip Vanderdecken, has to lift a terrible spell from his father-captain, who once recklessly made a fatal vow on a sacred relic, and then, while at sea, in a moment of despair, blasphemed the Lord God and thereby doomed himself and his family. command for eternal wanderings, but getting rid of the curse turns out to be not at all easy...
