The Fredegar Chronicle is one of the largest sources on the history of early medieval Western Europe. The history of their creation is mysterious, and the name of the author is unknown. Scientists can only guess where and when the text was created. One thing is clear: this work, written in difficult to understand language, captures the birth of the Frankish ethnic identity. The barbarian people, until recently, begin to imagine themselves as the heir of a great bygone empire. In the "Chronicles" folklore motifs and historical events are intricately intertwined, recreating the atmosphere of the long-past brilliant Merovingian era, which became the first step in the formation of modern European civilization. For the first time, a complete translation of the "Chronicles of Fredegar" is published in Russian. The text is provided with detailed historical, philological and cultural comments.
